Edward Weston "Weston is, in the real sense, one of the few creative artists of today. He has recreated the matter-forms and forces of nature; he has made these forms eloquent of the fundamental unity of the work. His work illuminates man's inner journey toward perfection of the spirit." --Ansel Adams, Date Unknown Edward Weston (1886-1958) may seem like he was a confused man in trying to find his photographic goal(s). Just like many other photographers, both of his time and now, he strove to find what truly satisfied his talent and the acceptance of himself. He generated something for all photographers. This was success and recognition as a "grand master" of twentieth century photography. This was a legacy that tells an interesting tale; it tells a tale of a thousand plus successful and loved photographs, a daily journal, and a life with its ups and downs and broad dimensions. He was born in Highland Park, Illinois, and thus he was an American photographer. His mother died when he was five, possibly the reason for his skipping out of his schooling. At the age of sixteen (1902), his father bought him a Kodak box camera (Bull's-Eye No. 2). Soon he was saving money to buy a better 5x& camera with a tripod. Taking photographs interested and obsessed him. He wrote, "I needed no friends now. . .Sundays my camera and I would take long car-rides into the country. . ." In 1906, two things happened. First, a submission of his was printed in the magazine Camera and Darkroom. This photograph was called simply "Spring". Secondly, he moved to California to work as a surveyor for San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. From that time on, his interests lied in everything that was unorthodox (astrology, the occult, nudism, vegetarianism, etc.). Maybe he never was much of an orthodox type man or photographer. He went back to Illinois for several months to attend the Illinois College of Photography. The inspiration behind this was to show his girlfriend, a daughter of a wealthy land-owner that he'd make money for them. He then headed back to California for good. This lead to marriage in 1909 and to two sons soon afterwards. During this time, Weston also became the founding member of the Camera Pictorialists of Los Angeles. 1911: Began a portrait studio in Tropico, California. This studio would stay open until 1922. Also 1911: He started writing articles that were published in magazines. One of these magazines was called American Photographer. His third and fourth sons were born in 1916 and 1919. Weston had always enjoyed photography as an art, but, in 1915, his visit to the San Francisco Panama Pacific Exhibition began a series of events that would lead him to a renouncement of pictorialism. At the exhibition, he viewed abstract paintings. These caused him to vow to capture "the physical quality of the objects he photographed with the sharpest truthfulness and exactitude". Thus began a dissatisfaction with his own work. In 1922, he traveled to Ohio and took photographs of the Armco Steel Plant and then went to New York. There he met Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Charles Sheck and Georgia O'Keefe. After that, he renounced pictorialism all together. He often traveled to Mexico during the 1920s, and his photographs included nudes. One of these nudes, named Tina Modotti, would turn into his own personal love affair, breaking up his marriage. He made many photographs in Mexico. Some were published in the book Idols Behind Altars by Anita Brenner. During this time, he also began to photograph seashells, vegetables and nudes. In 1929, his first New York exhibit occurred at the Alma Reed's Delphic Studios Gallery and later showed at Harvard Society of Contemporary Arts. His photographs were shown along with the likes of Walker Evans, Eugene Atget, Charles Sheeler, Alfred Stieglitz, and many others. In 1932, he became a Charter member, along with Ansel Adams, of the "Group f/64" Club. The club was also founded that same year. The goal of this club was to "secure maximum image sharpness of both foreground and distance". In 1934, Weston vowed to make only unretouched portraits. He strived to be as far away from pictorialism as he could. In 1935, he initiated the Edward Weston Print of the Month Club. He offered photographs for ten dollars each. In 1937, he was awarded the first Guggenheim fellowship. In 1940, a book called California and the West featured his photographs and the text of Charis Wilson his new wife (not the nude, Tina Modotti).

The two transferred their interest to the Hindman’s company on the existing tax basis so as to be sold to finance the companies. Jiffy lube realized a lot of money from the sale of partnership interests. The Hindman strategy towards the financing of the company is to use their interests as the financial resources. In his strategy for Jiffy lube, hind man proposed that they adapt the McDonalds plan of the quick oil change business. In this strategy they were to have at least 270 centers put in operation by 1985 and by 1990 they should have already opened more that 1000 service centers. The lube Jiffy to which Hindman is a partner also plans to sale franchises to cater for some costs such as advertisement (Jeffry, 2003, 521). The Jiffy lube company plan to construct real estate and establishment of new franchises. 50% of franchises require financing from their real estates and construction financing. By 1985 the company plotted to raise $10 million to finance all the projects it had to undertake. This amount was to be sourced from Old Court Saving and Loans. The amount was enough to cater all needs at the point when the budget was done. For this case Jiffy lube was to work with Shearson Lehmon Brothers (Jeffry, 2003, 522). . However, as the Jiffy Lube project was in progress the Old Court Saving and Loans collapsed when it had financed only 25 out of 37 centers Jiffy lube had put in its plan. Other financial institutions were not willing to support the continuity of the project. After the collapse, the Hindman bargaining position was to look for another financial institution to complete the project. Hindman says that, what was to go wrong went wrong in this case. Hindman did not give up with the situation as he had to follow up with the Old Court. Despite his efforts he could not succeed as the state had snatched all documents and thus the first planned $10 million could not cater for the whole project. In the Bridge Capital Investors, Alex Brown & sons suggested that $10 million be raised in equity of the partnership real estate. The partnership in this case could get $40 million to replace the loan from Old Court and enable completion of the Jiffy Lube projects. Despite the confidence that hind man had over all the negotiation they had within the Bridge Capital investors and the financial institution as the Ernst and Whinney discouraged the Alex Brown not to get involved with anything that the Old court had involved with (Jeffry, 2003, 522). . The proposed financing by Jiffy lube did not work as it was planned and thus severe consequences put the Jiffy lube into a threat of collapsing. Being that the company could not wait for the funding from saving and loan, the company had to stop some of its cash payment on real estate purchases. The contractors to Jiffy lube line up while those people who expected to get money from franchises relied on the already completed service centers. Also a long delay to complete the project of Jiffy lube could also damage the strategy of this company (Jeffry, 2003, 523). . To avoid some of the laying consequences, Jiffy lube had to finance its construction. They had to use the cash they had kept in the reserve. Although the money from the company’s reserve was not enough for the completion of the project, Hindman had to fill the gap by doing personal financing. Also since the franchises were the main selling agents for the Jiffy lube products, the company had to give full support to them despite they needed more resources to be established (Jeffry, 2003, 524). . This quote itself makes readers question the validity of status in society as this reveals us how a fisherman is trying/planning to outsmart a Jinni. In the story we see here that a womans hand is cut off after giving food to a poor man. Later in the story this act of generosity is what saves her as the scene when she tries to save a baby from drowning the food that she gave to the old man comes and restores her hands. Seen in the story the power of generosity helps her retain her power as a woman. We see this similar concept in another story in the thousand and one nights named The Miller and his Wife . Where the wife used her intelligence to retain her power. The wife in the story after finding out the millers dream about the treasure uses this to try to attra ct the attention of her real lover which is their neighbor. Having this attribute helps her both gain her actual lover and getting rid of her husband. But the exact thing women were valued during this time overcomes her and she fails to get what she wants. Instead of holding onto her power with her intelligence she lets her love and sexual desire for the neighbor get the best of her thus leading her both to lose her love and the treasure. In the Tale of Ala-al din and the wonderful lamp we see this aspect of gender/Power dynamic. Women are rarely given voices and are only to be desired by men. We are introduced to this character named Ala-al-din even is considered the protagonist is actually a character that is filled with greed. When Ala-al-din first meets with the genie and turns ala-al-din who is considered a low-life into a well-respected man only for his riches. When Ala-al din was transformed into this new man we see his undeniable greed as he only wanted to flaunt with what he wanted. His main desire was getting the sultans daughter despite her already being married he makes a plan to her. This idea shows one of the framings of women in the thousand and one nights as in this case we see the daughter acting as a desirable object. At the end of the story we are given this closing which states Aladdin had won the hearts of the people by his gentle bearing. He was made captain of the Sultans armies, and won several battles for him, but remained as courteous as before, and lived thus in peace and content for several years. When reading this quote readers get a sense of this feeling of greed. The theme of Aladdin seems to focus on this idea that the whole rag to riches theme can be only achieved by the feeling of greed. That if you want a better life for yourself you will have to be greedy. Ala Al-Din also shows his power by outsmarting the genie Before meeting the genie Ala al din is seen as a low life as he is very poor but we see this quickly turn around when he meets the genie and is then transformed into a wealthy respectable man. We see this interesting connection also within The fisherman and the Jinni how a person with low status is able to outsmart a being who is considered powerful. This shows how this idea of status is imaginary and means nothing. Ala-al din is actually powerful in his own terms and doesnt need society labelling him of such low status. Conclusively The thousand and one nights in a larger frame actually shows us the power and value that women possess regardless of the fact that the stories were labelled as misogynistic by many and the morals and virtues believed when the stories were made.. Women possess this power of intelligence that helps them retain their power which is clearly seen in numerous stories in the thousand and one nights. The thousand and one nights clearly act as a symbol of feministic literature pieces from many years to come.

Personal Narrative- Shoulder Injury I felt it pop, and pain engulfed my shoulder like ants cover an anthill that has been stirred with a stick. It made me angry, but it didn't help things to get mad. There was nothing I could do but try to recover in time to start over. Giving up wasn't an option. My junior year in high school, I went out for basketball. I liked it for a while, but when games started I was on JV. It was okay, but I was only getting to play two minutes per game. This didn't make me very happy. With all the time that I was putting in to play, it just wasn't worth it. My dad told me to just stick it out. Some of my friends told me that I should just switch to wrestling. I didn't know if this was possible, so I talked to the coach. The coach said he would be glad to have me on the team, but I would have to talk to the counselor. I talked to him and explained why I wanted to switch sports and he gave me the go ahead. There was only one thing standing in my way: how was I going to persuade my parents to let me wrestle. I talked to my dad about it and he said that if that was really what I wanted to do then that would be fine. I decided that I would play one more game of basketball and if things didn't get better, I would switch. Things didn't get better. I went in o nce for two minutes. I got my weight certified and started wrestling over Christmas break. My first practice was horrible. The head gear straps made my head raw and I got my butt kicked. I didn't know anything compared to the other guys in the 135 weight group. I learned a lot from them, though, and as time progressed, I got better and could actually wrestle with them. I found that there were some moves that wouldn't work on me, because my shoulders were very flexible. It was great, because some kids were afraid that they were tearing up my shoulders, so, they wouldn't use some of the techniques that they regularly would have. Finally, I had enough practices to wrestle in a meet. I was nervous, because it was my very first meet, and it was a varsity meet that our JV was going to.

At this part of the story it seems quite questionable as to his reasons for doing so. Gawain responds to the beheading game challenge in a humble, yet heroic sense. After the Green Knight barges into King Arthur's court and criticizes the Knights of the Round Table saying, Where is now your arrogance and your awesome deeds for all cower and quake(l. 87, 91) The Green Knight is now saying that the Knights of the Round Table are cowards. He is calling them out. The only one to accept the challenge is Arthur strictly to show that he is not a coward.
